RESISTANCE: Indigenous Art Pop Up

The Alaska Native Arts Foundation loved seeing so many people join us for the pop-up exhibition RESISTANCE last week at the Wildbirch Hotel in Anchorage, Alaska. We estimate that nearly three-hundred people joined us during the evening, including many of the participating artists. We would like to express our gratitude to the many project supporters who made the event a success: Native Movement, the Atwood Foundation, the Henry Luce Foundation, the Alaska Native Heritage Center, the Anchorage Museum, the Wildbirch Hotel, the Curating Indigenous Circumpolar Cultural Sovereignty project at York University, First Light Alaska, Covenant House and Rob Kineen with North American Traditional Indigenous Food System. A big thank you to the curatorial team for building this project with such care: Erin Ggaadimits Ivalu Gingrich, Nadia Jackinsky-Sethi, Drew Michael, Melissa Nenantaxnen Shaginoff and Clover Snelling-Klanott. Thanks also to the exhibition installation support team (especially Hans Hallinen, James Signoretti, and Coco Lynge).

It was a treat to sample foods prepared by Rob Kineen, including wild Alaskan salmon, moose meat and Tlingit potatoes. During the opening event we were blessed to witness a qulliq lighting ceremony by Ayyu Qassataq. Quyana for bringing this energy to the space.

If you missed the pop-up RESISTANCE opening event, we hope you can join us next month when the exhibition re-opens at the McPeck Gallery on the University of Alaska Anchorage Campus on November 13. The exhibition will remain on display through January 2027.

The Alaska Native Arts Foundation is excited to begin planning for our 2027 exhibition programming. If you are interested in sponsoring an artist to be part of the 2027 exhibition plan, please reach out to ANAF.
